Economic abuse most common form of domestic violence

It's a problem that is typically hidden behind closed doors. Domestic violence can occur in any California neighborhood. It does not discriminate based upon age, race or even economic level. However, one thing that it does do is cause harm to all of those affected by it.

When one thinks of domestic violence, the obvious choices are physical or emotional abuse. While these types of abuse are easier to spot than others, they are not the most prevalent. As Serena Williams points out as a representative for the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse program, economic abuse occurs in over 90 percent of domestic violence cases.

Economic abuse has numerous aspects. Sometimes the abuser will prevent the individual from obtaining a job. Other times, the abuser will harass the individual while he or she is on the job; this can often lead to the individual losing the job. In both of these instances, the individual being abused will find it difficult to have the financial means to leave the relationship.

Economic abuse can also take the form of creating havoc with the individual's credit. By either opening credit card or other loan accounts in the individual's name or creating mounting debt under that individual's name, the abuser is often able to prevent the individual from being able to rent an apartment. This can also cause problems when it comes to connecting utilities without having to come up with a large deposit.

Victims of domestic violence are often hesitant to speak out for fear of what will happen. Many times, these individuals do not feel that they have any recourse or can make it on their own. However, there are legal remedies available through the California legal system. An experienced attorney can help one get headed in the right direction.
