California adoption basics

Many California families long to add a child to their family. For one reason or another, they wish to make this addition through the adoption process. Likewise, there are numerous children in California and elsewhere waiting for a permanent home. Additionally, there are birth parents who are unable to care for a child; however, they want the opportunity to choose the family that will raise their child.

There are several different ways in which a family can adopt a child. Those wishing to adopt a child from the foster care system can do so through an adoption agency. In fact, profiles of children waiting for such an adoption are available on the internet through California Kids Connection.

Some birth parents and families choose to use an independent adoption. In this case, the birth parents actually decide on the specific family with whom their child will be placed. With this type of adoption, the birth parents are required to know specific facts about the proposed adoptive family. An Independent Adoption Placement Agreement must be signed by the birth parent, and it becomes irrevocable after 30 days.

The decision to either adopt or place for adoption is a very personal one for California families and parents. When an adoption agency is used, the process is fairly straightforward and easy to navigate. However, in the case of an independent adoption, one will want to make sure that everything is properly and legally handled. An experienced family law attorney can help guide one through the process.
