Child support and unwed parents

Parents have a responsibility to take care of their children. Sometimes the parents are married, and both parents make sure that the children have what they need; other times, the parents are divorced, and one parent typically pays child support as part of his or her responsibility. Additionally, there are situations in which the parents remain separate; however, their responsibility to the child or children is still as if they were married or divorced. When one of the California parents does not have custody of the child, he or she is typically responsible for paying child support.

Recently, Mark Hamill's son Nathan found himself in the spotlight in regards to a child support issue. In late 2015, he met a woman whom he dated for approximately three months. During this time period, he apparently fathered her child. According to the child's mother, Hamill has not been a part of their lives and has not paid child support. She claims that at first he agreed to pay $500 per month.

The mother is stating that she wants Hamill to pay his share by means of child support. Additionally, she would like the child to be covered on his insurance, and she is asking that he pay back child support. Hamill is not providing comment on the matter.

Child support is one important way in which parents make sure that their children have what they need. Regardless of the parent's marital status, they each are responsible for their children. In a situation such as this one, the custodial parent may find it necessary for the California court system to settle the matter.
