Prenuptial agreements a good idea for California couples

Planning for a California wedding can be an exciting time for couples. Many decisions need to be made – caterer, florist, photographer, etc. In addition to planning for the wedding, it is also a good idea for the couple to plan for the marriage. Some additional items to consider revolve around assets and liabilities that each individual brings to the relationship, children from previous relationships, businesses and other such concerns. This is a good time for couples to discuss their financial future and decide if prenuptial agreements are in their best interest.

If one spouse brings more assets or liabilities to the marriage, a prenuptial agreement should be considered. No one enters a marriage planning for a divorce; however, it is a good idea to discuss individual financial situations and expectations just in case the marriage does not work out. With a prenuptial agreement, decisions regarding how assets and liabilities should be divided can already be agreed upon.

In many instances, one or both individuals have children from a previous relationship. As a concerned parent, each will each want to make sure that these children are taken care of and receive their intended inheritance in the event that their parent dies. A prenuptial agreement can detail this information so that there are no surprises later on.

Weddings are often a beautiful celebration of a couple's love for one another. However, many California couples have later found out that there is more to a marriage than a wedding. Prenuptial agreements protect each individual in case the marriage is not what was expected, and they can also open the door to conversations that should take place before the wedding bells ring.
