Amber Heard accuses Johnny Depp of ongoing domestic violence

A lot of publicity has been given to the news of the reported divorce filing of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Along with the day-to-day details of what would normally be private affairs, reports of domestic violence were allegedly made to the Los Angeles Police Department. While some may believe that these are unfounded allegations, domestic violence is a very real threat to many marriages, including those in California.

After a marriage of 15 months, Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp on May 23. Four days later, she filed a petition to obtain a restraining order against Depp, alleging ongoing physical abuse. She claimed the latest episode occurred on May 21 when he allegedly struck her in the face and caused property damage in her apartment.

Heard blames Depp's known problems with alcohol and drug dependency as the cause of his short temper. She alleges his frequent state of paranoia causes his temper to flare, which, in turn, puts her in a position where she fears for her physical well-being and even her life. Despite Depp's denial of any wrongdoing, the judge granted Heard a temporary restraining order. Depp was ordered to get no closer than 100 yards from Amber and also to stay away from their apartment in Los Angeles.

This type of scenario is not limited to celebrities who live high lifestyles. Any spouse who is threatened by the dangers of domestic violence is entitled to take legal action against the abuser. Along with filing criminal charges, it may be in his or her best interest to consult with an experienced California family law attorney who can explain the client's rights and provide support and guidance throughout the process of protecting a client's safety.
