Using mediation to settle family law issues

California residents might be under the impression that any time they have an issue that involves their relationship or their children that it will be necessary to hire an attorney, go to court and allow someone who does not know their family's dynamic to make decisions that directly affect their futures. Fortunately, that does not have to be the case. Mediation provides an alternate way of dealing with family law issues.

Mediation allows the parties to come to an agreement that is specifically tailored to their circumstances. In many cases, the reason that California residents end up in a courtroom is because they do not have a working knowledge of family law and what restrictions are placed on judges when it comes to making decisions. One or more mediators provide the parties with knowledge of what the law says, what a judge would say and options for how to resolve the issues.

In addition to coming to an agreement that is satisfactory to both parties, there are other advantages to using mediation. It is often more time and cost effective. Furthermore, much of the stress that accompanies a courtroom battle is relieved. The process also encourages the parties to cooperate and compromise, which can come in handy in the future.

If you have family law issues that need to be resolved, you might benefit from taking advantage of what mediation has to offer instead of going to court. This can be especially advantageous when children are involved since the parties will need to find a way to work together to raise their children despite the state of their relationship.
