Judge says music exec cannot avoid payment of back child support

Mathew Knowles, who is the father of popular singer Beyoncé, might be a familiar name to California music lovers. The music executive's divorce from ex-wife Tina Knowles dominated headlines when it happened. Knowles also made headlines when it was revealed that he was expecting a child with another woman while he was still married to Tina Knowles. Now, he is back in the spotlight for failing to pay child support for the daughter that was born out of that affair.

Court records indicate that when Knowles discovered in Sept. 2009 that his then-girlfriend was pregnant, he paid her approximately $225,000 to keep quiet and have an abortion. The woman continued the pregnancy, and Knowles discovered that he had a daughter. However, he did not attempt to initiate a relationship with her and did not make an effort to pay child support.

In court, Knowles contended that since he had already paid the mother of his daughter a substantial amount of money, he should not be obligated to pay any back child support. The judge, however, disagreed and ordered that he pay around $70,822 for back support -- plus interest. He was also ordered to begin making support payments for his daughter in the amount of $1,496 per month.

Most California fathers are willing to play parts in their children's lives and to support them. Those who owe child support sometimes find themselves in financial situations that make meeting their monthly obligations difficult, but they do what they can to bring their payments current and repay any missed payments. For those who believe that they do not have to take responsibility for the children they father, it may be eye opening to discover that even celebrities like Knowles cannot avoid their obligations.
