Inhalent-abusing mom and billionaire dad child custody battle

In California and elsewhere, child custody battles can be an extremely difficult process, for the parents as well as for the child. The hope is that the child's best interest is the primary focus of the proceedings. An out-of-state child custody battle between two high profile parents who were never married centers around financial concerns and substance abuse issues.

In 2005, Sidra Saucedo, a former model for Albert Ferretti and Seven Jeans, had a daughter with billionaire trader, Steven Schonfield. They never married, yet have been fighting for custody of their daughter in several courts in another state for a decade. In Dec. 2013, Saucedo was hospitalized for an overdose caused by huffing Dust-Off spray, a product intended for cleaning computer keyboards.

Schonfield, the founder of the $2 billion Schonfield Group, informed the court in Jan. 2014 that Saucedo had inhalant abuse issues. He shared video evidence of her huffing air-blast spray. Until Saucedo's overdose, the billionaire father had primary custody of their daughter, while the mother had visitation rights. Since the court became aware of the overdose, the mother lost her visitation rights. The two parents will be heading to court, after two years of delays, because Saucedo wants to be a part of her daughter's life.

There are numerous factors to consider in child custody cases. Also, when substantial changes occur in a parent or child's life, reconsideration of an existing child custody order may be appropriate. It remains to be seen if Saucedo will be able to convince the court that the current order should be amended in the best interest of the child. In California, if either parent feels that a modification of an existing court order would be appropriate, an experienced family law attorney may be able to help.
