Three helpful tips in resolving summer parenting time disputes

When the last day of school comes around, it is undeniable that kids feel a certain sense of nirvana. After all, they don’t have to get up early for class, and their days are essentially care free. However, this sense of freedom may not translate to parents; especially those who are divorcing or who are separated, as they may disagree on how much time each parent may be able to spend with the kids.

Because of this, disputes over summer parenting time are common, especially when a temporary parenting time schedule has not been established. With that, we offer some helpful tips for those who may be facing difficulties.

Know that you are still a parent – Even though your romantic relationship with your spouse or significant other is ending, the relationship with the kids will continue on. As such, your breakup does not mean that you are no longer a parent, so you should be entitled to time with the kids even though the other parent may not like you anymore.

Keep the children first – We have become accustomed to hearing parents complain about “my parenting time,” or them wanting   “my kids.” Indeed,  time with your children is important, but decisions made with “me” in mind may not consider the children’s needs. So keeping the children first can help in avoiding and resolving parenting time disputes.

Be flexible –  Being open to minor adjustments is also helpful. For one, it can help in assuring that both parents have time with the kids. Also, as a measure of good faith, it can help in making future adjustments.
