How to prepare for divorce while keeping your sanity

If you (or your spouse) are contemplating divorce, you may have a general idea of the emotional toil you are about to undertake. After all, there is a reason that celebrity breakups are tabloid news. The emotions and vitriol that come out when a relationship dissolves can be terrible. Not that every divorce has these issues, but preparing yourself emotionally is an important part of avoiding such drama.

With that said, we offer the following tips to help potential divorcees wrap their minds about what is going to occur.

Take your emotions out of it – This may be easier said than done depending on the reasons behind the end of your relationship, but the less your emotions are involved, the less likely you will have to deal with protracted litigation and bickering over money and property. Essentially, you have to look at a divorce as a business transaction.

Begin collecting financial documents – As we just mentioned, divorce should be viewed as a business transaction. For those make these transactions regularly, it should be old hat. For those who do not make these decisions for a living, just know that preparing for a transaction involves knowledge of what you owe and what you have. A such, you need financial documents to do so.

Keep past misdeeds in the past – It is natural to harbor ill feelings towards your soon-to-be ex-spouse. After all, after they wronged you, you may want revenge. Just keep in mind that punishing someone through divorce is an expensive way of taking your frustrations out.
