Britney Griner seeks annulment

WNBA star Britney Griner was not on the court when the Phoenix Mercury began the defense of its title on Friday. As a matter of fact, she will not be with her team for six more games as a result of the suspension the league handed down for her role in being arrested for domestic assault against Glory Johnson, who plays for the Tulsa Shock.

The two were arrested on May 8 after their altercation led to the police being called. Briner has since pled guilty and has agreed to enter into a diversion program; where if she successfully completes it, she will have the charges against her dropped. The charges against Johnson are still pending.

The relationship between Briner and Johnson appears to be a rocky one. The two were married three weeks after their brawl, but earlier this week Briner announced that she was seeking to have the marriage annulled. She explained through a statement that she thought it would be best to seek counseling before getting married (ostensibly because of the altercation) but that she sought to get married anyway despite her feelings.

She further explained that her decision was a mistake, and that she and Johnson agreed that they should separate, get divorced or have the marriage annulled. It remains to be seen whether Briner’s petition will be accepted as annulments are granted only for specific reasons, such as fraud, lack of ability to consent or some other type of misunderstanding that is central to the marriage (such as a person still being married to someone else).
