Is your child support payment correct?

In the midst of divorces and child custody disputes, the issue of child support can be hotly contested. There are some who believe that child support is simply an unfair (and illegal) form of spousal maintenance, while others believe that the amount ordered will not be enough to adequate meet a parent’s needs when raising a child.

This conundrum can bring out the question of whether a parent is being treated fairly when it comes to determining the amount of child support to be paid. For the parent who believes that they pay too much in support, consider this; the average cost of raising a child to age 18 has grown to $245,340. This comes out to just over $13,000 per year, or $1134 per month. So if you consider the average support amount that is paid per month ($750 per month), you may rethink whether you are being treated unfairly.

Indeed, there are a number of factors that can affect your child support payment. As we have noted in a prior post, the Dissomaster considers the amount of time you spend with the child, your individual income, as well as the other parent’s and whether there are other support or maintenance orders, among other things. As such, it is important to review your individual situation with an experienced family law attorney to determine if any adjustments are warranted if you feel the support amount ordered is incorrect.

One thing to keep in mind, the guideline support amount does not consider a number of costs that parents incur for extracurricular activities. Such as uniform costs, enrollment fees and travel costs.
