CHILD SUPPORT BLOG SERIES: Child Support 101: The Basics

In California, Child Support is usually determined by a complicated formula, which is calculated by the Courts on a program called the Dissomaster.

The formula using various inputs such as each parent's gross monthly income, the amount of time each parent spends with the child, and each parent's tax status. These inputs, as well as several others are put into the formula on the Dissomaster and the amount of monthly Child Support calculated is called the "guideline" Child Support amount.

Once the guideline Child Support amount is calculated, there is a "rebuttable presumption" that the guideline Child Support is appropriate. A rebuttable presumption means that the burden of proof shifts to the parent that wants a support amount that is different from the guideline amount.

While there are a few ways to convince the Court that the guideline amount is inappropriate, these potential challenges will be covered in depth later in this blog series.
