California adoption basics

The desire to have a child can be overwhelming. For many California couples, this is a natural process; for others, having children naturally is not an option. Then there are those who can have children naturally and may already have children of their own but wish to expand their families. Whatever the reason, adoption is often the best way to complete a family and provide a much-needed forever home for a precious child.

The adoption process can appear daunting. Who is eligible to adopt? What are the requirements? Where does one even begin? These are just a few of the questions that come to mind when one begins to consider adoption.

Many mistakenly believe that only couples can adopt; however, adoption is open to both couples and single individuals. Under traditional circumstances, any minor child that is not married may be adopted. The basic requirement is that the adoptive parent or parents must be at least ten years older than the child being adopted. This age requirement may be waived if the adoptive parent is a stepparent or close relative. Additionally, if the child is twelve years of age or older, the child must agree to the adoption.

The entire process can appear to be cumbersome and filled with paperwork. The process is designed to make sure that the best interest of the child is met. In most cases, the adoption process is a smooth one for the California family. However, a number of challenges and obstacles can arise. It is often in the family's best interest to work with an experienced attorney to make sure that everything is handled appropriately and that the obstacles are minimized.
