Do not expect the divorce process to be without complications

California residents who keep up with celebrity gossip might anticipate that getting a divorce is now an amicable and hassle-free process. Celebrities announce that they are "uncoupling," using mediation and collaborative divorce while remaining friends. What they do not show is that behind the scenes, no divorce is without complications.

Any time emotions are involved in any process, there is a potential for conflict. One day, the parties can be working together like a well-oiled machine to resolve their issues and come to an agreement. At the next session, one of the parties could become combative because he or she was suddenly hit with doubts that the decisions being made are the right ones. This can sometimes set back negotiations, and it could take time to get them back on track.

Furthermore, well-meaning friends and family often provide advice based on what they went through during their divorce. What they fail to remember is that every relationship is unique, and what might have worked for one couple might not be right for another. It is often recommended that the parties remember this as they work through their own settlement.

A California couple who enters into settlement negotiations knowing that complications are going to happen stands a better chance of overcoming those conflicts when they arise. Getting a divorce is an emotional process, and denying those emotions can be counterproductive. The key is often to make a conscious effort to keep those emotions from directing -- and interfering with -- the negotiation process. Doing so could allow both parties to walk away feeling that a satisfactory agreement was reached.
