Repeat domestic violence offender sentenced to prison

Domestic violence can come in many forms. Emotional distress or abuse, physical abuse, or being threatened or harmed by a weapon are all considered domestic violence. Recently in California, a woman fell victim to physical abuse by her boyfriend, who had been convicted of similar crimes previously.

In March of 2012, a woman was attacked by her boyfriend. Apparently, the woman had woken him up, which caused the man to get angry, and he struck her in the face. Police were called to the scene and reported that the woman's face was bruised and bloody and that she was scared for the officer's safety since her boyfriend had fallen back asleep and they might wake him.

The man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for assaulting his girlfriend. He also has past convictions. In Nevada, he was convicted for battery with intent to commit sexual assault. In California, he was convicted for assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily harm, attempting to prevent a victim from reporting and inflicting corporal injury on a spouse.

Victims of domestic violence have options for protection. In California, victims may seek a temporary restraining order or even a Domestic Violence Restraining Order against the person who has caused physical or emotional distress. The order can last from three weeks to five years with the potential to have it renewed permanently. In this case, the repeat offender has been sentenced to jail. Whatever the case, seeking help from an experienced attorney who can help in the fight to protect an individual's rights can be the first step toward a new beginning.
